Deep within the captivating rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His life was mostly untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His website primary duty was essentially to care for his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the gales through the single tree on the peak were his only associates. Day in day, looking out for his charges imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
But, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plot.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
